There has been a debate both offline and online following Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s declaration that girls outsmarted boys in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

Contrary to what the Cabinet Secretary had loudly declared, Soko Directory has found out that boys actually performed better than girls. So, are girls riding in the glory of boys?

According to an analysis acquired by our team, 81 boys scored grade A as compared to 60 girls, 1,813 boys scooped grade A- against 901 girls, 4,596 boys scored B+ against 2,748 girls, 7,738 boys scored B against 4,890 girls while 11,631 boys scored B- against 7,754 girls.

From the results released by Dr. Fred Matiang’i, the number of girls who scored grade C+ and above, the requirement for university entry was 28,386, down from 50,415 last year, this being a 43.7 percent drop.

The number of boys who scored grade C+ and above, the minimum requirement for university entry went up by 904 to 41,687 from 40,783 last year. This means that from the total number of those who have qualified to go to the university by scoring grade C+ and above, boys have accounted for 59.49 percent and girls accounting for 40.51 percent.

During the release of the results, Dr. Fred Matiang’i commended the girls for ‘sterling’ performance and for ‘outshining’ the boys in this year’s KCSE. Soko Directory can now reveal that the CS for Education used the top ten list to reach the conclusion that girls had performed better than boys. Among the top ten performers, six girls took the positions and boys took the remaining four.

The Cabinet Secretary made similar remarks during the release of Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) but it has emerged that boys also outsmarted girls in those exams. Dr. Matiang’is default settings about girls should be reset and state what is real because as it is always, numbers don’t lie.
