Girls Outshine Boys in the 2017 KCSE Results

Karimi Naomi Kawira from Pangani Girls High School has emerged as the top student for the 2017 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Results by scoring a total of 87.11 points.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i released the results on Wednesday at Nairobi School.

This year’s exams have improved compared to last year’s where the total number of students who managed to score grade A was 142 from 141 in 2016.

On the other hand, the number of students who scored grade A- this year declined to 2,714 from 4,645 in 2016.

The CS noted that the total number of candidates who managed to score grade C+ and above declined compared to 2016.

Girls have outshined boys in this year’s KCSE too.

This year’s KCPE and KCSE examinations have come amid tight security and tough regulations that were meant to ensure that no cheating is reported.

A total of 40 teachers are said to have been involved in exams irregularities and they risk facing deregistration as employees of the Teachers Service Commission. One school that practiced exams irregularities has already been deregistered and results cancelled.

A total of 615,773 candidates registered for the 2017 National Examinations that were done in 9,350 centres between November 6 and 29.

The exams were marked from December 7, which means the work was done in a record time of about 11 days.

In 2016, 141 candidates managed to score the coveted grade ‘A’ compared to 2,685 who attained the grade in 2015.

Furthermore, only 4,645 candidates scored grade A–, 10,975 attained B+ while 17,216 scored B plain. A total of 55,952 candidates scored B– and C+ in last year’s results.

In overall, only 88,929 candidates attained the university entry grade of C+ and above compared to 169,492 the previous year.
