Recall Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Results, KNUT Tells KNEC

The Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Wilson Sossion has called on the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to recall the just-released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.

In a letter addressed to the examination body, the KNUT Secretary General wants a proper auditing of the results to ascertain the reason for the mass failure of students in the national examination.

“We condemn the release of the exams in the strongest terms possible as it amounts to a fraud that has led to students’ mass failure,” he said.

According to KNUT, the Ministry of Education might be using the examination to deliberately fail students in an effort to cut down on the number of students joining public universities on a government program.

“We call on the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to recall the KCSE Results without further delay to allow thorough auditing of the results,” he added.

The KNUT’s sentiments were in conjunction with those of the National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga who has called for the task force to be formed to look into the mass failure in this year’s Form Four national exams.

Mr. Odinga expressed concerns that almost 90 percent of the students who sat this year’s KCSE failed and will not be joining the public university in the near future. Raila believes the government is gambling with the students’ future by deliberately ruining their hopes for a better future.

The KCSE results were released on Wednesday. According to the results, only 70,073 students managed to score grace C+ and above hence qualified for university out of the 611,952 students who sat the exam from 88,929 students who qualified in 2016.

In 2016, according to the KCSE results, 141 students scored grade A while this year, there was a slight improvement of one A with the number coming to 142.
