National Bank of Kenya has confirmed that its security was breached by hackers on Wednesday and about 29 million shillings stolen.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the bank has disputed allegations that the amount lost is more than 300 million shillings.

“We confirm that there was an attempted fraud in the normal course of business on 17th January but the Bank’s monitoring and security resources frustrated the attempt,” read part of the statement.

Despite stating that the fraud attempt was frustrated, the bank went ahead to state that “the amount of attempted fraud is about 29 million shillings” and added that “we are confident that we will recover most of that money.”

The bank has assured its customers that their accounts have not been affected and that security operatives are carrying out further investigations.
