UNICEF Scolded for giving Uhuru Kenyatta a Global Job

The United Nationals Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has received a scolding from a section of Kenyans for “giving President Uhuru Kenyatta a global job.”

Last week, UNICEF appointed President Uhuru Kenyatta as the global champion for youth empowerment, a position the Head of State accepted.

A section of Kenyans took issues with the global fund saying that the appointment of President Kenyatta was a mockery to the youth.

Among the reasons given by Kenyans were that during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s first term in office, billions of shillings that were meant to empower the youth of Kenya were looted and culprits never brought to book.

The National Youth Service (NYS) is said to have lost more that 20 billion shillings meant to empower Kenyans youth with skills, loans and employment. The Cabinet Secretary for Devolution then was Anne Waiguru who is currently the Governor for Kirinyaga County.

The Youth Fund, which was meant to give the youth loans was also looted with Kenyans pointing an accusing finger at the Head of State for condoning corruption in his government.

Using the hashtag #ShamefulUNICEF, a section of Kenyans highlighted the issues they feel UNICEF should have considered before appointing Uhuru Kenyatta to the position.

Some pointed out the brutality of the police that was directed to Kenyan youth after the August 8th general election where more than 30 of them were killed. President Uhuru Kenyatta later commended the police for a job well-done.

In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO), appointed the former President of Zimbabwe as its ambassador leading to an uproar around the world. WHO later withdrew the appointment.

It is not yet clear whether UNICEF will yield to the condemnation of Kenyans and recall the appointment of Mr. Kenyatta. Statehouse is also yet to issue a statement on the issue though the President had accepted the offer.
