Deaths, Displacements, Destruction and Hopelessness as Floods Rule

A total of 63 people have been confirmed dead, more than 100 injured and more than 146 thousand displaced as the rains continue to pound across the country.

The weatherman has indicated that the rains will continue into the month of June and warned Kenyans to brace themselves for more destructions.

Most residents in Nairobi woke up on Tuesday and Wednesday only to find most estates flooded with water. The poor drainage system just made matters worse.

In Nyando, Kisumu County, more than 5,000 families have continued to spend their nights in the cold and their villages are invaded by water. Women and children are the most affected. The residents are blaming the county government for not even visiting them and provide the necessary support.

In Turkana County, thousands of families have been left homeless with thousands of livestock being swept away by the raging floods. On Tuesday, the floods swept away some graves forcing family members to return their loved ones to the morgue for a reburial.

Tana River is another county that has greatly been affected by the ongoing rains, having recorded 5 deaths with massive destruction of property.

Things are set to get worse after KenGen warned Kenyans living in the lowlands of Tana River that there is an imminent flooding after the overflowing of Kiambere Dam.

Kiambere Dam is part of Tana’s Seven Forks and since Monday, the water level has risen by 1.6 meters above sea level, the highest in many years.

The maximum designed level for the dam is 700 meters and KenGen says that the water level has surpassed the level and that floods are prone to occur.
