Ethiopia’s New Prime Minister Restores Internet Blackout

The government of Ethiopia has lifted the online blackout that has been in place for the past three months.

This move comes after Ethiopia got a new minister, Abiy Ahmed who has promised reforms following the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegn who held the position.

Mobile and broadband internet services shut down in December in many regions outside the capital that were hit by unrest that threatened the ruling coalition’s tight hold on the country.

Rights groups accused the government of trying to stop them spreading news online and organizing rallies calling for land rights and other freedoms – charges the government denied.

Buhari Set to Meet U.S President Donald Trump

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on April 30.

The meeting comes weeks after Rex Tillerson, then U.S. secretary of state, visited Nigeria and other African countries in March only to be fired after his return to Washington.

Tillerson’s trip was part of attempts to smooth relations after Trump reportedly dismissed some African nations as “shithole countries” in January. Trump later denied making the comment.
