Safaricom’s M-Pesa is now officially certified by the GSMA Mobile Money Certification.

The GSMA Mobile Money Certification defines and promotes excellence in the provision of mobile money services around the world based on an independent assessment of a provider’s ability to deliver secure and reliable services. The certification also assesses the ability of the service provider to protect the rights of consumers as well as combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

According to a statement from GSMA, the efforts to certify a product are measured against global industry best practice, and a pass mark of 100 percent is required. The certification aims at enhancing consumer trust, accelerate commercial partnerships, and set a public bar to which all providers can aspire.

By being certified, it means, in the words of GSMA, M-Pesa has proven that t its services are amongst the best in the industry and that the provider, (Safaricom) is serious about protecting the rights of the consumers, delivering reliable and secure services among others.

M-Pesa now becomes among the first mobile money service to be certified with over 27 million customers and more than 148,000 agents across the country since its launch 11 years ago.

The certification comes even as the Communications Authority report showed that M-Pesa is still the leading platform that Kenyans have continuously used to transact via mobile.
