At Least 20 Dead, 2,500 Houses Swept as Dam Bursts its Banks in Solai

At least 20 people were killed and hundreds of others displaced after Patel Dam, in Solai, Nakuru County burst its banks and swept them away on Wednesday night.

During the night incident, more than 2,500 houses were swept away with officials saying that some people might be missing.

Officials say that due to the ongoing heavy rains, the dam burst its banks and swept thousands of homes while people were sleeping.

The Red Cross and Nakuru County disaster management teams went at the scene on Thursday morning. 40 people had been pulled out of the mad by the time of going to the press with hundreds of others unaccounted for.

According to officials from Nakuru County, the mad and water submerged home up to a radius of 2 kilometers.

The continued rains and the raging floods have killed more than 140 people across the country with more than 200,000 displaced. More than 250 schools have been damaged and learning is yet to resume.

The meteorological department has warned Kenyans of more heavy rains that will continue up to the end of this month
