Dear Looters: You Have Eaten Everything, Please Don’t Eat Us
Dear Kenyan politicians, you have eaten everything, please don’t eat us. This was the plea of a resident in Eldoret when she was asked about the state of corruption in Kenya.
The rich are now tired of us. They want to kill us so that they can remain alone in this country. They are tired of the poor. Another lady, from Uasin Gishu, said over the allegation that there was poisonous sugar in the country.
During the week, the Nandi Hills Member of Parliament, Alfred Keter, said that Kenya would be saving two billion shillings every week if the looters rested on Saturday and Sunday without looting.
The truth is Kenya is no longer a working nation, it is no longer a walking nation, neither is it a crawling nation, it is a looting nation and that is the truth.
Stats show that Kenya loses close to 50 percent of its national budget to corruption and instead of finding out how to fill the loopholes, we end up increasing the budgets each coming year.
On 14th of June, the Cabinet Secretary for Treasury Henry Rotich read to the nation the national budget. It was one of the most ambitious budgets, standing at 3.07 billion shillings and the highest in the whole of East Africa.
The truth that people don’t want to face is that 50 percent of this budget will be looted and the most unfortunate thing is no common mwananchi will ever benefit.
That budget was not for Kenyans. It was for the poor funding the rich and there are no two sides of the coin in that matter.
When Steve Biko Wafula wrote about “A Legacy of Corruption: 5.3 Trillion Shillings Allegedly Stolen Under UhuRuto Administration,” many people disputed the numbers. Some said it is not possible for the country to have lost that kind of money. Some even accused him of spreading unfounded truths about the ‘government’. Denial. Denial is what has been elevating the looters and killing the poor.
Now the looters have eaten almost everything. Soon they will eat us or if not, poison us. The health sector is ailing. Just last week, it was hit a 7 billion shilling scandal. According to the looters, the poor have no right to health.
The NYS I where billions were lost. Those who stole were elected into bigger offices. The NYS II, more billions of shillings lost. What happens? Those who stole 400 million shillings of the 9 billion shillings are arrested. Where are those who stole the remaining 8 billion? We are being played. There is nothing like fighting corruption.
The scandal in the Irrigation Board, the scandal in the National Cereal and Produce Board, the scandal in the National Hospital and Insurance Fund, the scandal in the Kenya Pipeline, the scandal that led to Kenya Airways losing 27 billion shillings etc… scandals. Scandals all over.
And now there is the issue of poisonous sugar. Actually, we do not know whether the sugar is poisonous or not. Those in charge are more confused than us the consumers. Dr. Fred Matiang’i of Interior says the sugar has both mercury and copper. His counterpart, Aden Mohammed jumps in and says there is nothing like sugar having mercury or copper and demands an explanation from his counterpart. KEBS comes out and says, the sugar is safe. It then comes up again and says the mercury and copper levels in the sugar are below dangerous levels. Pressured hard, they change the tune and say, the sugar does not have mercury but copper.
For some time now, we have ignored a section of looters in this country: the governors and Members of County Assemblies (MCAs). The amount of money these village gods are looting cannot even be explained. But we can’t see that because we are busy denying. Denial.
This is a man eat man society. Period.
