Gikomba Again: Another Fire Claims Nine

At least nine people are feared dead, 58 injured and property worth millions of shillings destroyed following a 2 a.m. Fire outbreak at Nairobi’s Gikomba market on Thursday.

This is according to the St. John’s Ambulance who are at the scene. Victims have been rushed to Kenya National Hospital for treatment.

The fire incident has left many traders with losses after a section that deals with timber and clothes near Kamukunji area was gutted.

Reports from the St. Johns Ambulance states that by Thursday at 7 am, that had already evacuated up to 40 people from the scene.

“At least 40 casualties evacuated by St John Ambulance following a huge fire that gutted part of residential and market sections of Gikomba,” said the emergency service provider.

Police have said that they are yet to establish the cause of the fire noting that efforts to do so are ongoing.

Gikomba market has had fire incidences every now and then leaving traders with great losses.

In 2017, the same incident happened and President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered for investigations to find out the cause of the fire, until now, results of the investigations have never been released to the public.
