Kenyans Enjoyed Ugali More in June than in May on Lower Maize Prices

Kenyan households had a reason to smile aftermarket prices for a kilogram of maize declined to an average of 53.09 shillings in June from 58.10 shillings in May 2018.

This is according to the recently released statistics by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics on the monthly Consumer Indices (CPI) and rates of Inflation for the month of June 2018.

According to the statistics, the price for a kilogram of maize went down by 12.16 shillings in June 2018 compared to last year when they were at 65.27 shillings in the same period.

The overall year on year inflation stood at 4.28 percent in June 2018. The year on year food inflation similarly, decreased from 1.35 percent in May 2018 to 0.9 percent in June 2018.

A kilogram of Sukumawiki averagely retailed at 57.87 shillings in June, up from 56.02 shillings in May. These prices were higher compared to the same period last year when the same quantity was being sold at 42.68 shillings.

On the other hand, a kilogram of Onions that was being retailed at 133.51 shillings in June 2017 had a market price of 147.84 shillings in June 2018.

The Month of May experienced the highest market prices for a kilogram of Onions which were being sold at 180.74 shillings.
