Kenyans To Pay More For Super Petrol as Diesel Drops Marginally

The Energy Regulatory Commission has announced new fuel prices that will cover a period of one month up to 14th of August 2018 making super petrol users dig deeper into their pockets.

In the new prices, Kenyans will pay more for petrol but less for diesel at prices that became effective on the midnight of 15th.

A liter of petrol will now cost 113.73 shillings in Nairobi after its price went up by 1.53 shillings. The price of diesel, on the other hand, went down marginally by 0.51 shillings (51 cents) making it to retail at 102.74 shillings per liter. Kerosene users also have something to smile about after the price went down by 0.78 shillings to retail at 84.95 shillings per liter in Nairobi.

Mombasa will have the lowest prices across the board with super petrol going for 110.42 shillings, diesel at 99.44 shillings and Kerosene at 82.16 shillings per liter.

Kisumu fuel consumers will pay 115.64 shillings for super petrol, 104.88 shillings for diesel and 86.83 shillings for kerosene.

Nakuru residents will pay 114.39 shillings for super petrol, 103.63 shillings for kerosene and 85.76 shillings per liter.

The Energy Regulatory Commission attributed the changes in fuel prices to changes in landed cost for imported fuel prices.

The current changes in fuel prices, however, might just be temporary because the government plans to implement the 16 percent Value Added Tax on fuel beginning September.

The implementation of 16 percent VAT will see the price of super petrol rise by over 17 shillings to retail at 130 shillings. Diesel and kerosene will equally rise in what is likely to see an increase in the cost of living for millions of Kenya.

ERC has been blamed by most Kenyans for increasing fuel prices without considering the consumer. Most recently, the commission scrapped the standing charge for electricity but instead of electricity bills coming down for most Kenyans, the increased immensely.
