Fresh fry Oil, Marie Stopes Adverts Banned over Indecency

The Kenya Films Classification Board chairman, Ezekiel Mutua, has announced the ban of adverts by Pwani Oil’s Fresh fry, on Television, due to sexual content and Marie Stopes for encouraging abortion, on radio.

Mutua said the move has been reached at because the adverts are airing before 10 pm which is in breach of the law.

“The board has banned Marie Stopes from airing a message on radio that promotes abortion contrary to Article 26 (4) of the Constitution,” Mutua said adding that the Marie stopes advert aired on radio targets teenage girls by offering them alternatives for unwanted or unplanned pregnancies.

Mutua further added that the advert had not been submitted to the board for examination and classification, as is required, ordering that its airing be stopped immediately.

The chairman went ahead and demanded that MarieStopes issues a public apology following the advert.

On Pwani oil’s Fresh fry, Mutua said the advert used sexual innuendos and lewd language hence the ban.

“This advert continues to air on TV stations yet it has not been submitted to the board for examination. Consequently, it has been banned and should not be exhibited or broadcast anywhere within Kenya,” said Mutua.

Kenya records more than 4oo, ooo induced abortions with reports estimating that 464,690 in 2012.

Abortions continue to claim lives every year in Kenya despite the practice being outlawed.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recorded 36 per 1,000 unsafe abortions among reproductive-aged women in the Eastern and Middle Africa being the highest globally.
