Motorists in Nairobi are set for tough times from November as they will be forced to pay 400 shillings as parking fees from the current 300 shillings following a proposal by Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko.

The 400 shillings will affect motorists who will park their vehicles within the central business district (CBD), a move that comes with mixed reactions as it contradicts Sonko’s pledge to reduce parking fees once he assumed office to 150 shillings.

The increase in parking fee meant to boost City Hall’s 2018/19 financial budget that is aimed to stand at 34 billion shillings.

On Monday, the Nairobi County Government tabled their revised 2018/19 finance bill before the county budget and appropriations committee on by the county treasury.

Other motorists who will be affected include large body vehicles such as trailers who will be required to pay 6, 000 shillings for parking and offloading, Lorries 4, 000 shillings and canters 2, 000 shillings.

Boda bodas operating from the CBD will pay a monthly fee of 1000 shillings each while tuk-tuks operating outside the CBD will have to part with 1,500 shillings monthly.

Any Public Service Vehicle that may wish to be allocated parking space within the CBD will be required to pay 250,000 shillings per year.

Motorists are not the only ones to be affected by increased fees as the county treasury has proposed more taxes on city residents through additional levies on garbage collection.

Households withing informal settlements like Kibera, Dandora, Mathare, and others will be paying 100 shillings monthly for garbage collection while those in middle-income estates such as Donholm, Buruburu, and Pipeline will pay 300 shillings per month;

Households in high-end estates such as Kileleshwa, Runda, Lavington, and Kilimani will pay a monthly garbage collection fee of 500 shillings.

Day Primary schools, Nursery and Day care schools with over 850 students will pay up to 30,000 shillings per month for garbage collection while Boarding Primary schools, Secondary schools, Universities and Colleges with students above 2000 will pay up to 65,000 shillings monthly.

The Assembly has until November 27 to either pass or shoot down the bill.
