Mombasa road has been ranked as the most dangerous road in Kenya after recording 42 deaths in a span of less than a year as weekends remain the time of the week when the majority of accidents occur.

A report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) showed that 365 deaths had occurred by 5th November 2018 through road accidents.

Closely following Mombasa road is Waiyaki Way with 38 deaths, the newly upgraded Outering Road recorded 31 deaths while Thika Super Highway recorded 23 deaths.

The report also showed that road fatalities in Nairobi had declined in the last three years though they increased countrywide compared to the year 2017. The increase has caused concern among authorities which has led to the reincarnation of the Michuki rules.

2017 deaths were 414, a drop from 461 in 2016 which had also decreased from 668 in 2015.

“As of 11th November 2018, 2,642 lives have been lost with 4010 being seriously injured and 4,527 getting slightly injured. This is a high increase as compared to 2,414 fatalities in 2017,’ NTSA reported on Friday.

In Nairobi, pedestrians’ deaths were highest at 238 followed by motorcyclists at 47, passengers 40, drivers 33 and 7 pedal cyclists.

By 5th November 2017, 261 pedestrians had died, 58 motorcyclists, 46 passengers, 24 drivers, and 14 pedal cyclists.

The transport body has attributed most of the deaths on poor footbridges and crossing points while blaming the public for failure to observe traffic rules.

Matatu Owners Association chairman, Simon Kimutai had on a different occasion said that lack of enough footbridges and ignorance of pedestrians in observing traffic rules had contributed to the rise in pedestrian deaths within the capital city.
