Maize Prices Still Low Across the Country: Nakuru and Busia Lead in Low Prices

Prices of maize across the country continue to be low despite protests from maize farmers in the greater Rift Valley region.

In Bungoma, a 90-kilogram bag of maize is retailing between 1,600 shillings and 1,800 shillings. A 2-kilogram tin is going for between 40 and 45 shillings.

In Kakamega, a 90-kilogram bag of maize is retailing between 2,000 and 2,100 shillings. A 2-kilogram tin is going for 50 and 55 shillings.

In Kisumu, a 90-kilogram bag of maize is retailing at between 2,600 and 2,750 shillings. Most maize traders from Bungoma and Kakamega are taking their produce to Kisumu.

In Mombasa, the price of a 90-kilogram bag is at 2,300 shillings, while in Malindi and Lamu, the price is at 2,450 and 2,500 shillings respectively.

The price of a 90-kilogram bag of maize is low in Kitale and Nakuru at 1,800 while a 2-kilogram tin is at 35 shillings in most parts of Kitale and 45 shillings in Nakuru.

In Eldoret, the price of a 90-kilogram bag of maize is slightly above that of Nakuru by 100 shillings (1,900 shillings). Large-scale maize producers are drying their lack with the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) which says it has already bought 100,000 bags of maize, too little for farmers.

The 90-kilogram bag of maize in Kisii is retailing at 2,000 shillings while in Busia, the price is at 1,200, the lowest and this has been attributed to cheap maize flooding in from neighboring Uganda.
