Kenya is expected to hit the 1 billion gigabytes mark by 2022 where Kenyans would consume 269 million gigabytes, mobile subscriptions account for the majority of internet connections.

Kenyans use the internet connection on their mobile phones through installed applications and below we give you a list of Apps that are most downloaded by Kenyans, interestingly Loan Apps dominate the list.

WhatsApp Messenger

WhatsApp Messenger is a free messaging app available for Android and other smartphones. WhatsApp uses your phone’s Internet connection and is currently downloaded on almost every smartphone in Kenya. It allows easy sharing of short videos and pictures and has features that allow one to form groups for various purposes. 

Facebook

Facebook, founded by Mark Zuckerberg, is an American online social media and social networking service company.

Facebook’s co-founders are Zuckerberg’s fellow Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

Facebook is the second most downloaded App according to Nuendo’s The State of Mobile Data 2019. Kenyans have converged on Facebook and formed different groups that target to solve various problems in the society. 

Facebook Messenger App

Facebook Messenger is a messaging app and platform developed by Facebook. Facebook Messenger was originally developed as Facebook Chat in 2008 and was later revamped in 2010 as Facebook Messenger. Facebook Messenger enables Facebook users to share private messages.

TALA Loan App

Tala Loan App formerly known as Mkopo Rahisi is owned by a California-based finance company in Kenya and offers instant unsecured mobile loans to Kenyans.

Tala Loan App is the most downloaded Finance App in Kenya according to Nuendo’s research.

Opera News and Entertainment

Opera News is a personalized news App that allows you to follow trending topics, share and view the latest videos whether local and International.

BRANCH Loan App

Branch, a product of Branch International, is a microfinance lending institution that operates in Kenya and other countries.

The Branch App has quickly grown its market share and its loan application process is user-friendly once one downloads the App on their smartphone.

Opera Mini Internet Browsing

Opera Mini is a lightweight and safe browser that allows its users to surf the net faster, irrespective of Wi-Fi connection strengths.

OKASH Loan App

Okash, a Microloan service provider in Kenya, was launched by Opera Software. The Loan App is still in its early stages and plans to begin by providing loans for 100,000 Kenyans.

Okash Loan App is downloaded through the Google play store.

Truecaller (Call Identity & Messaging) App

Truecaller is a mobile app that finds mobile number details globally given a telephone number.

Numbers are registered on the App or their phonebook contacts are synced and have an integrated caller ID service to attain call-blocking functionality and social media integration to keep the phonebook up-to-date with pictures and birthdays.

VIUSASA Video Streaming

Viusasa, a Kenyan VOD platform, is the 10th most downloaded App. Viusasa offers entertainment and information video content, Kenyan music and TV channels on any device.

Viusasa content is available in English, Swahili and Vernacular languages.
