UON Students Protest Brutal Murder of Leader ‘OCS Ragira’ at Club 36

The University of Nairobi (UON) students took to the streets on 15th March 2019 protesting the brutal murder of their former student leader commonly known as OCS Ragira.

The students blocked State House Road as they engaged police in running battles all the way to the morning hours.

“Police have taken over the issue and it’s our hope that normalcy will return soon,” UON’s Director of Corporate Affairs John Orindi said while confirming the protests.

Another UON student was stabbed in the course of the day and rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital.

The conflict has been sparked by a property, ‘Club 36’ where the UON students go for affordable meals. The students claim the property is being taken over by a militia group that has been demanding money from the traders ranging from 10,000 shillings to 200,000 shillings.

Antony Manyara, the UON student leader said the management of Club 36 should be under students. “We will stop at nothing until the students own Club 36 as 95 percent of them do their shopping there,” said Mr. Manyara.

The slain OCS Ragira had posted on social media that Mungiki had taken over the market and was demanding 10,000 shillings from every trader to construct a stall.

“It is unfortunate that Mungiki is terrorizing Klabu 36 traders with pangas and guns taking advantage of the situation. They are demanding 10K from every trader to build a kibanda. This issue is disturbing as the police are watching it happen. Students are being harassed and others losing their phones. We want to know why the police can side with people terrorizing innocent Kenyans. Why should a mama mboga pay 10K to unknown people to do business? Are we managed by terrorists in the name of police? I reported this matter to Jogoo house control room and police were sent but they instead resorted to ignore the situation. We now appeal to the County government and National government to tell us who are these criminals. We cannot allow. Personally, I was threatened by a panga. So where are we heading as a nation? Sad! ” Ragira’s post on Facebook read.

Kilimani MCA Moses Mogeto has since been arrested over the murder of OCS Ragira as investigations continue.
