The Beyond Zero marathon 2019 was all colorful with dignitaries, corporates and individuals adding to over 20,000 participants.

The Deputy President Hon. William Ruto was present and completed a 21-kilometer race in 2 hours 6 seconds. President Uhuru Kenyatta eagerly waited to receive Margaret Kenyatta, the First Lady, who ran the 10-kilometer race.

The Sunday marathon climaxed with the delivery of a newborn girl at the Pumwani maternity after the mother experienced labor pains while participating in the inaugural Philips Lumify Pregnancy Walk which was 2 kilometers. The baby was named Margaret after the First lady who pioneered the Beyond Zero Marathon.

The walk had around 400 expectant women who later posed for photos with President Uhuru.

The new fragment was introduced to shine the light on preventable maternal deaths and infant mortality by Philips Kenya in collaboration with the Beyond Zero platform.

The Philips Lumify ultrasound is a technology that is mostly available in formal hospitals and clinics. The portable ultrasound and mobile app allow Mothers-to-be to see high-quality images of their unborn babies on a smartphone.

Josephat Bett was clinched the men’s title at a record 1:01:34 closely followed by Philemon Rono in 1:01:34 while Brilliant Kipkoech was crowned the women’s title.
