Cabinet Secretary for Trade and East African Community Peter Munya has denied claims of plotting to kill the Deputy President William Ruto.

Speaking outside Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters, CS Munya said that he and two other cabinet secretaries, ICT CS Joe Mucheru and Health CS Sicily Kariuki, were summoned by the DCI after the DP made a call to complain about the claims.

“They (DCI) have confirmed to us that the Deputy President made a call and complained that some cabinet secretaries and some other senior government officers met at the La Mada on May 14. In that meeting, there were plans that were being hatched to kill him,” said CS Munya.

Peter Munya, however, confirmed that they were not able to record a statement since standard procedures expect the complainant should record a statement.

“We want to confirm we have been having meetings. Indeed, we had a meeting in La Mada and we will continue having meetings because under the Constitution of Kenya, there is freedom of association and expression,” Munya added.

CS Munya defended the meetings saying that they were for members of parliament from the Mount Kenya region who complained that they were not easily accessing cabinet secretaries and senior government officers in the quest for development in their constituencies.

“The people of Mt Kenya region, like all other people in this country, are entitled to development and government services. Therefore, there is nothing sinister or nothing unusual for people from a particular region in this country to have meetings to discuss affairs affecting their region,” Munya further said.

This comes a day after Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot warned senior government officials against scheming to undermine Deputy President William Ruto over his 2022 presidential bid.

Tensions have been running high as the 2022 elections come closer with many claiming that the Mt. Kenya region is planning on not supporting DP Ruto’s presidential bid.
