Being unemployed and having no source of income is quite devastating and frustrating. Most Kenyan graduates are out there seeking jobs but disappointments are what they face when the sun goes down.

To at least get their pockets mumbling with coins, Kenyan youth can resort to small scale businesses to earn their bread. Here are some of the ventures they can consider;

Online jobs

With the advancement in technology, Kenya is one of the African countries, or rather the leading embracer of technology. A large percentage of the population is undoubtedly the youth.

It was estimated that by 2019, about 3,000 Kenyans were actively doing online jobs.

There are several jobs one can do online provided they are well versed with the trends on the internet.

Online writing

There are several sites that require online writing services and are good at making payments as well. You can register as a member or a writer, do assignments for foreigners, fill forms for a client, write a good Curriculum Vitae for a client or do any other form of academic writing.

All you need is just register as a member, out show your skills eminently and provide the payment option and you will be good to go.

Consider sites like Hivisasa, Ajira, Academia-Research, and Freelance Writing Center and inquire about academic writing.

Digital Marketing

This is the most current avenue of making money as a youth. Digital marketers are dominating the internet and especially social media platforms. Business enterprises both startups and well-established ones, use digital marketers to promote and make known their products and services they offer.

The ability to impact the public is a factor here. The impacts here mean that most people would always want to know what you are doing and imitate your actions. So how do you attain this?

Have the most followers on your social media site, have it well managed and controlled, make it look positive and one that most people would always visit to know what you post.

Most digital marketers are earning good money just at the comfort of their couches.

Blogging

Blogging is another form of digital marketing, but it is better when you register your own domain. Social domains are owned by other companies or individuals but when you register your own, you become your own boss.

It looks difficult when you are the start but it gains momentum when you finesse your way through.

Small but profitable business ventures.

Small business ventures are advantageous in their own way; they require small initial capital and few legal formalities to start and operate.

With the “kadogo” economy being predominant in the retail sector, this will still be a good business venture to engage in.

Consider;

  • Opening corner shops- try selling basic household commodities such as sugar, flour, cooking oil, etc.
  • Opening a grocery and fruit vending shop- You can sell the fruits or blend them and sell them as pudding juice.
  • Selling clothes- Either imported or ones bought at a relatively cheaper price.
  • Opening a barbershop or Salon-people try new barbers and salons every day, just be dexterous.
  • M-Pesa shop
  • Cybershop with playing station, photo printing services, and internet services.

Agribusiness

Most of the youths have been avoiding farming especially the learned lot, but in the real sense, it has made many successful. If there is land in your home, don’t go to hustle in town, do research on the best fruits and vegetables to plant and immediately start farming venture.

You can use this avenue to open doors to other venues. Some have even forgone their careers to stick to agriculture and farming. Just make pay for hay, you might stay!

Professional services and alternatives.

You can consider teaching and offering training to people depending on your area of forte.

An unemployed teacher can start by offering tuition services to neighborhood students, or teach at a start-up school, exercise your profession.

Gambling and Forex Trading

Gambling is another to make quick cash though it is so addictive and requires consistency and responsibility.

Though not wholly accepted by everyone, those who are for betting can make their attestations that this is a win or lose avenue. Those who have tried it have contradicting testimonials but still, approve it.it is also not for the faint-hearted.

You can win millions with just a hundred bob; it just depends on your betting skills and sometimes luck. If you love the internet, try forex trading. This business is particularly suitable for university graduates who did mathematics, business courses and statistics. With the kind of skills Kenyan graduates possess, forex trading is one of the most suitable ventures they can pursue.

The gambling sector is still facing some challenges but when it will be back on track, you can try your luck.

You can try any of these avenues to make you earn your own income, be your own boss and as conduits to open doors to other avenues.

It is not easy to get a well-paying job even when you have piles of papers imprinted with your over-qualifications. Sometimes you just have to kick the doors when no one is ready to open.
