Bodies of Over 227 Sacrificed Children in Peru Unearthed

The bodies of more than 227 sacrificed children believed to have been sacrificed have been discovered in Peru by Archaeologists who say it’s the biggest number they have discovered.

The site where the 227 remains of the children were discovered was once used by the pre-Columbian Chimu culture which is suspected of having sacrificed the children.

The Archaeologists have been digging since 2018 at the sacrificial site in Huanchaco which is next to a beachside tourist town north of the capital Lima.

“This is the biggest site where the remains of sacrificed children have been found,” the chief archaeologist Feren Castillo told AFP on 27^th August 2019.

The remains of the children, according to Castillo, showed that the children were between the ages of four and 14 years old and must have been sacrificed in a ritual to honor the Chimu culture’s gods as was the norm.

“They were sacrificed to appease the El Nino phenomenon,” and show signs of being killed during wet weather,” Castillo said adding that there could be more remains of children and so the number of bodies could be of more than 277 children.

“It’s uncontrollable, this thing with the children. Wherever you dig, there’s another one,” Castillo said with a tinge of sadness.

The bodies of the children’s remains, whom some still had skin and hair, were found placed in a position that shows they were buried facing the sea. Many children were killed as a form of sacrifice in the Chimu culture in Huanchaco, Peru.

The newly unearthed site of children’s bodies is out of continued efforts by archaeologists to unearth the number of sacrificed children sites with the sacrifices believed to have been carried out between the years 1400 and 1500.

The first site discovered with children bodies had remains of 56 children and was located in the town of Pampa la Cruz in mid-2018; remains of 140 children were again discovered a month later.
