In an interesting twist of events, Moi University has been ordered by the court to pay students 50,000 shillings for failing to include them in the graduation list for the ceremony set to take place on 22nd August 2019.

The students proved to the court that they satisfactorily fulfilled all the requirements set by Moi University on time but their names had not been included among those set to graduate in the August ceremony.

At least 700 students have their names missing in the graduation list of Moi University due to missing marks and hefty fee balances.

In a desperate attempt to seek justice, the Moi University students whose marks are missing despite fulfilling all the set requirements have sought help from a Mombasa court.

In a landmark ruling, the Mombasa court has declared that Moi University pays the aggrieved students 50, 000 shillings respectively.

The aggrieved Moi University students were, however, seeking to have their names included in the graduation list for August but will have to do with the 50,000 shillings and wait to graduate in December 2019.

The aggrieved Moi University students were supposed to have graduated in December 2018 but recurring lecturers strike has seen them delay for a year now while stuck with expired student identification cards.

The students set to receive the 50, 000 shillings are Verah Shawiza Manyonyi, Violet Ombaka Atieno, Obegi Malak Ochweri, Ndirangu Tabitha, Maureen Kwamboka, Yvonne Akhago Buluma, Omondi Linda Akinyi, John Kamau Muthoni, Sarah Karanja Wanjiku, Jakoyo Paullete Akinyi, Ruth Wamboi Mwangi, Karanja Susan Waithira, and Patience Mbithi Kamutu.

The petitioners stated in court papers that they had fully paid their fees as required and handed in their projects by the deadline but their names still missed in the Moi University graduation list for 22nd August 2019.

The petitioners argued that despite an intervention from the Ministry of Education that saw the missing marks released on 22nd July 2019 and reflecting on the students’ portal, their names were still not included in the graduation list published on 25th July.
