Universities to Stop Offering Journalism, Business Degree Courses

A number of universities will soon stop offering Degrees in Education, Journalism and Business Administration in a move that will see the Ministry of Education bring to an end multiplication of courses in Universities leading to overcrowding.

Journalism, Business Administration, and Education are offered in literally all the universities in the country despite there being no demand as the fields are already overcrowded.

In a country where there are 74 universities in total, both public and private, Business Administration is offered by 67 universities, Journalism is offered by 66 universities while Education is offered by 55 institutions.

Not all the universities offering the courses enroll enough candidates because of the many options students have to choose from which is hence making it uneconomical.

Kenya’s education sector is set for major reforms with the Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha training his eyes on the higher learning sector to keep them from drowning in their current financial challenges.

Education experts have been for some time now been warning students from pursuing Education as a course saying the Country already has more than enough teachers making the course unviable.

A report tabled by CS Magoha notes that the concern is that the universities offer similar programs and that newly established universities ought not to be offering the same courses offered by their mother institutions.

As a solution, the report advises that public universities specialize in teaching and researching in specific fields, however, this will see the institutions lose a number of courses in their list.

Dropping the courses in a number of universities will mean job losses in those departments as those academic staff will lose relevance in the institution which will also see the number of enrolment of students reduce.

According to the report by the Ministry of education, it is only Law and Engineering Courses that have not suffered duplication as they are offered in a few universities.

Arts and Humanities degrees are also at the risk of being dropped given that they are offered in 55 institutions. Agricultural Universities will be required to remain so and drop courses that are not related.
