The process of bringing a child to this world and raising them up to become responsible adults is not easy and it is probably for that simple reason that the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization officials urged Kenyans to take care of the elderly in the society.

The Founding President of the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization, Hon. Phoebe Asiyo, noted with great concern that a majority of the aged are left to face a lonely difficult life without even communication from their children.

“It is shameful that some of our elderly mothers, in various parts of this Country, have been left alone to die, without any assistance, even from their own children or grandchildren,” she noted.

“I want to appeal to all Kenyans and the Government of Kenya also, that they must take care of the elderly,” the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake founding President appealed on behalf of the aged in the Country.

“Parents must be taken care of, we as Maendeleo are very lucky to have mama (Phoebe Asiyo) with us at our age,” the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization National Chairperson Mrs.  Rahab Muiu, HSC said reiterating Phoebe’s statement.  She applauded the Government’s initiative on the cash transfer safety net and added that the monies should be added to benefit more elderly people in the villages.

“I want to appeal to the Government to give a little more in future so that many of our elderly people can benefit from the very humble contribution,” Phoebe, the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake founding President said.

The National Chairperson, Mrs. Rahab Muiu advised the youth to take care of their parents saying, ”visit them, see them, and talk to them”.

Mrs. Muiu referred to a speech by the former US President who said a phone call to his grandmother made all the difference and was very important to them both urging the youth to keep touch with their aging parents.

The women leaders spoke in Mwea, Embu County during a Centenary celebration for the late parents of the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization National Chairperson, Mrs. Rahab Muiu, where friends and family were gathered to mark the day.
