DStv Explora, The King Over Netflix And Other Streaming Platforms

BY Juma · September 13, 2019 09:09 am

I am a proud owner of a DStv full kit; the dish, the decoder, remote, name them. In fact, the congested estate of “Naivas Ruaraka”, along Outering Road, my name long changed to “Mtu wa DStv” (The DStv guy). For me, it is a sense of pride and gives me a feeling of ownership.

In the past few days, I have watched a conversation unfold online of individuals trying to compare what DStv offers and what Netflix and other online streaming platforms offer. As a person who has tried the “two worlds”, I dare say DStv remains the king that will always roar above others.

The Price

As the month of September was just about to kick off, DStv sent me a message. It was a good message. I was going to pay less for my next subscription. Am on DStv Premium and my subscription just came down to 7,500 shillings from 7,900 shillings.

I later came to realize that the prices had been cut across the board. Those on DStv Compact Plus are now paying 700 shillings less to 4,500 shillings from 5,200 shillings. Customers on DStv Compact will pare now paying 2,500 shillings from the initial 3,200 shillings while those currently on DStv Family are parting with just 1,200 shillings from the initial 1,900 shillings.

Customers on DStv Access were not left behind. They are paying 900 shillings from 950 shillings. Those on Premium+Asia Addon are paying 8,800 shillings from 9,200 shillings while those on Premium+French Addon are paying 11,100 shillings from 11,500 shillings.

See the table below

The price has been a contentious issue when it comes to other players. Last week someone challenged saying that Netflix charges roughly 1,200 shillings, Apple TV around 500 shillings, Prime Video around 300 shillings.

The person had a valid point but will you be missing by abandoning DStv for these other streaming channels? I will tell you.

First, to stream anything, you need a stable internet connection. Let us do the math. A stable uncapped internet streaming service goes for between 5000 and 6000 shillings, Let’s say you are using Netflix, you will part with between 6,000 and 7,200 shillings at the end of the month.

With that amount, you will still not be able to watch football content such as the Premier League, UCL, La Liga, Serie A, Carabao among others. You will not even have content for your kids, no documentaries, no cooking and lifestyle shows either.

With just 4,500 shillings, DStv will give you all the football content including and not limited to Premier League, UCL, La Liga, Serie A, Carabao together with content for kids among others.

In general, if you are going to choose the streaming, you are going to lose the following:

Sports: Are you a lover of sports? Through Supersport, DStv gives you the best in local and international sporting action. If you are a lover of sports, DStv is the home for that kind of stuff.

Entertainment for kids: If you have kids in the house, DStv should accompany their playtime. DStv prides itself in offering unique content for kids that will always leave them entertained with the best cartoon selection for all ages.

News: In the current world, you need news to know 24/7. Netflix has no news while DStv has all the news channels, both international and local with all the power of selection in your hand.
