It was mixed reactions, relief, and pain, for the family of Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter, Amanda Mutheu, as the car they drowned in onto the Indian Ocean on the 29th of September 2019 was being retrieved, 13 days since the tragic accident occurred.

The car that was carrying Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu has finally been recovered from the Indian Ocean bringing to an end an emotionally wrecking process.

The exercise which has since attracted the wrath of Kenyans online has involved eight South Africa divers who had been contracted in conjunction with the Kighenda family who have spent millions in the process.

The eight South African divers contracted from SubSeas Services, a commercial South Africa diving company, to help retrieve Mariam and the four-year-old Amanda, have been working in the mission led by the Kenya Navy.

Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter, Amanda, drowned after their car slid off the Harambee MV ferry to the Likoni channel.

Weather challenges had been said to be hampering the operation to retrieve the car which was sighted on the 9th of October 2019 with the government spokesman assuring Kenyans and the Kighenda family that the retrieval process would be done by 10th October 2019.

The bodies of Mariam and her four-year-old daughter were found in a tight passionate position at the back-seat of the car. Mariam who was seated on the driver’s seat at the time of the accident must have dashed on the back-seat to be at her daughter’s side in an obviously scary situation.

Pathologists had, however, earlier warned that the condition of the bodies might be graphic, if at all recovered, considering the duration they have had to stay inside the ocean since the day the car slid off the MV Harambee, not forgetting the underwater animals.
