The Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization has today, 23rd October 2019, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ndumu Water Tanks and Musoni Microfinance that will see rural women benefit with water tanks ranging from 1,000 liters to 10,000 liters.

The water tanks, in a bid to encourage harvesting of water during rainy seasons, will be available to Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization members all over Kenya at a planned pay courtesy of Musoni Microfinance.

“Tanks will enable women to harvest water and it is our aim to have each and every homestead in Kenya harvesting water to empower women to be sufficient in the grass-root levels,” said Nduva Muli, the Chief Executive Officer Ndumu Plastics.

“The Health of women in the rural areas of Kenya has been strained over the years because of carrying water on their backs for long distances,” said the West-Pokot County Chair Mary Mariach.

The Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization West Pokot Chair noted that the tanks would make it possible for homesteads to have water which would facilitate the nurturing of kitchen gardens.

“Kitchen gardens make it possible to ensure families get healthy fresh vegetables and at a time when our society is struggling with lifestyle diseases, a kitchen garden is a gem every homestead needs,” said Anne Kibet, the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization National Vice-Chairperson.

Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization members across the country who will be interested in getting the water tanks will have an opportunity to get low-interest loans from Musoni Microfinance which they can repay over a period of 36 months.

Ndumu Tanks company has promised that the tanks will be discounted and delivered at no extra cost to the rural areas.

“Harvest water during this rainy season to avoid following it later for long distances into the rivers,” concluded Musoni Microfinance chief, Stanley Munyao.

Harvesting of water has continually been emphasized considering the recent climate change that has seen Kenya experience long dry spells causing water rationing to follow dried up rivers.
