Pumwani to Open An Outpatient Hospital on Monday

Pumwani Maternity Hospital has been in service for the last 93 years which simply means that as maternity, it’s older than Kenya’s independence and is now broadening its services to all genders with a general hospital.

The Nairobi County Government will on Monday, 28th October 2019 open an outpatient wing at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital.

The new Pumwani Hospital will have the maternity wing as any other section as is witnessed in other hospitals and also have a section where Kenyans of all walks can be treated by doctors.

The new Pumwani hospital will accommodate patients who only require to see doctors without the need for admission.

Pumwani hospital, which is located around the South B slums, Majengo, Kitui slum, and Eastleigh, which are mostly occupied by Kenyan middle earners will serve as a solution as these residents will no longer need to commute to Mama Lucy Hospital.

Pumwani hospital patients who will need to be admitted will then be referred to the Kenyatta National Hospital.

“The outpatient wing is among the grand plans that we are having as a hospital. We will be opening the doors to patients come Monday,” Pumwani hospital administrator Geoffrey Mosiria said.

Pumwani Maternity Hospital comes from times when it has had to struggle with a tainted image which has led the County Government to transfer a number of its staff.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko early the year 2019 said that plans were underway to construct a 10 storey 450 capacity bed unit that would be named after him.

The unit, Sonko Pumwani Maternity Hospital, would stand side by side with the old hospital and compose of a pediatric ICU, an adult ICU, an HDU, staff quarters, laundry and all the necessary facilities.

The Nairobi County Government is also on the process of repossessing the Nyayo Ward area which was reportedly grabbed by developers.
