Safaricom Foundation And ActionAid Launch Water Projects

Close to 20,000 residents in Kitise and Makumeni in Makueni County will now get adequate water supply after Safaricom Foundation, in partnership with ActionAid launched a water project worth 25 million shillings.

The project which started in December 2016, will see eight learning institutions, and six market centers benefit from a steady and clean water supply. The project is aimed at improving food security and preventing water-borne diseases which were a challenge to residents in the areas especially to children under 5 years.

“We have a 3-year strategic plan as Safaricom Foundation, and it includes economic empowerment, education, and maternal health. With adequate water supply, providing access to services in education and health institutions will be better and more efficient as well as empowering communities,” said Joseph Ogutu, Chairman, Safaricom Foundation.

The project has been equipped with pipeline and borehole extensions distributing the water to homesteads and learning institutions while water kiosks set up in six market centers for the public to access water at an affordable price.

ActionAid and Safaricom Foundation have collaborated over the past 14 years, investing over KES. 100M into 16 water projects to improve water supply and sanitation services thus achieving additional improvements in livelihoods, health and nutrition, and education sectors.
