Sportpesa Fires 400 Employees As It Exits The Kenyan Market

SportPesa has fired at least 400 employees, days after it announced its exit from the Kenyan market.

SportPesa announced that it would no longer be offering betting services in Kenya in what it termed as frustrations from the government, especially after the introduction of 20 percent withholding tax on all the stakes placed during a bet.

While sending the employees home, SportPesa said their services were no longer tenable as a result of harsh government regulation on businesses in Kenya.

For years, SportPesa remained as the largest gaming company in Kenya before woes started flowing its way after the government canceled its operational permit in July.

The push and pull between the government agencies and the gaming companies went on for months before SportPesa decided to call it quits.

Another gamer, Betin, also announced an exit from the Kenyan market, firing at least 2,500 employees.
