KCSE 2019 Day 3: 14 Caught Cheating in Ongoing Examinations Arrested

On the third day of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), fourteen people have been arrested in Kisii County and are waiting to be arraigned in Court after they were caught in the process of cheating in the ongoing exams.

Among the fourteen arrested for cheating in day 3 of the KCSE include the proprietor of the private school where the cheating was planned and the deputy principal.

Also arrested yesterday, 5th November 2019, are 11 other suspects accused of impersonating Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam candidates at the same facility and were caught after Education officials and senior police officers raided the school after a tip-off.

The school principal is reported to have gone into hiding as police comb Kiogoro Division of Nyaribari Chache District where the school is located with the hope of taking him into custody.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha commented on the arrests saying the plans to cheat on the exam had been woven carefully with the culprits getting outsiders to sit for the exams while pretending to be the actual candidates.

“This was a very advanced scheme, to the extent that they started by planting their photographs on the KNEC schedules,” said Magoha referring to the document used to identify a particular candidate in an examination room.

Examination officials at the Kisii School have already been replaced.
All schools that are acting as examination centers are expected to leave their gates open throughout the day to ensure transparency.

“Some schools lock the gates so that they do their bad things inside there, last year, I had to wait for over 10 minutes for a gate to be opened, and your guess on what was happening as I waited at the gate is as good as mine,” Magoha said.
