Google Launches Digitization Project to Showcase National Museums

Tech giant Google has launched a new project that will digitize and enhance the showcasing collections at the National Museums of Kenya.

Through a partnership with the Ministry of Sports, Google launched the digitization project where people will be able to visit the National Museums online through the Google Arts and Culture App.

Google’s digital project dubbed “Utamaduni Wetu: Meet The Kenyan People” will showcase and tell stories about the Cultural Heritage of 28 communities in Kenya.

You will not have to visit the National Museums physically but just click a button and get access to the collections and information about Kenyan communities.

Speaking during the launch of the new digital project for NMK in Nairobi, Cabinet Secretary of Sports, Culture and Heritage Amina Mohammed said it would help bring back and preserve forgotten African traditions.

“The digitization of our intangible heritage will help us better preserve and broaden access to collections, and also enable us to engage, inform and inspire audiences in a way that can have a positive impact on society as a whole.

“I am encouraged that the digitization of the NMK collections opens our compendia to all those who have access to the internet in Kenya and the world as a whole,” Amina said.

The education sector will receive a boost from the digitization project at NMK as students will access the collections with ease without paying or traveling for physical visits.

To visit the National Museums online, you can download and use the Google Arts and Culture app that provides images of high resolutions.

The Google Arts and Culture App is available at the Google Play Store.
