Traffic Police Shoots Colleague In Attempt To Fight EACC Detectives

A traffic police officer in Kisumu County at Mamboleo roadblock shot and wounded his colleague in an attempt to fight Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives on Wednesday 20th November.

The EACC detectives from Kisumu regional office reportedly arrived at the spot during the morning hours to arrest the traffic police officers over bribery claims, before one of the police aimed at the EACC officers only to end up shooting at his colleague.

A video going viral online shows an evidently wounded police officer on the ground and unable to walk, with onlookers saying ‘the bullet has hurt his leg, his leg is broken, and he cannot run away’.

EACC Western Region acting manager said he would give the public a full report after identifying and interrogating the officers.

Even as Kenyans wait for the full report from the EACC western region on what transpired at the Mamboleo roadblock which Kisumu residents term ‘a hotbed for extortion racket’, traffic police bribery continues to be a menace on most Kenyan roads.

More often than not, motorists complain about the demands of bribes from police even when their vehicles comply with all traffic rules.

It is sad that Kenyans confess having to set aside money for bribes in their travel budget whenever they embark on journeys. This, they say, helps them save time in case officers decide to accuse them of any crimes, even though they are not genuine.

Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai after taking office recently acknowledged that traffic corruption is on the rise and said it is one of the things he hopes to stop.
