As the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) enters grade four next year, 2020, the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) is getting ready to train 68,490 teachers in December.

The TSC confirms that 91,620 teachers were trained in April and 68,490 more trained in August in readiness for the transition of grade three learners to grade four.

So far, the teachers’ employer has expressed satisfaction with how the new curriculum training takes place and the commitment that trainee teachers are showing towards it.

Even as teachers and learners get ready to continue with the curriculum in grade four, the ministry is working to see that the distribution of grade four textbooks is done by the time schools open next year.

According to the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), the ministry of education’s target is to have textbooks supplied to 22,000 public schools by end of November and has provided a list of learners per school so that it is easy to determine the number of books required per school.

To that effect, Deputy Director-Primary Education at the Ministry of Education, Ms. Nereah Olick has urged all publishers to ensure they work within the stipulated time or risk having their contracts canceled.

“We have done all that is required of us as a ministry, so it is up to the publishers to work as a team to ensure that the books are published and distributed in good time,” said Ms. Olick.

Ms. Olick further advised that teachers and parents whose children are set to join grade four should visit the KICD website for further guidance as all approved books have been published on the website.

The Kenya Publishers Association Chairman Lawrence Njagi said that they would ensure that all publishers stick to the agreement and avoid any causes of the derailment of the process so that schools get the textbooks in good time.
