As Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof. George Magoha released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results on Wednesday, 18th December, he talked about a number of things, among them the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) grade four roll out.

CS Magoha said that his ministry was ready for the roll-out and that as a ministry, they had made necessary preparations for it.

In his speech, CS Magoha said that textbooks and other learning materials have already been distributed to almost all primary schools across the country.

CS Magoha specifically said that about 97 percent of schools have received grade four textbooks and that by next year January, all schools will have received the books.

“I want to tell you that we are ready for the continuation of CBC and the grade four rollout is already prepared for as 97 percent of the schools have received textbooks. The other three percent have not received them due to bad weather conditions but they will get the books by January,” said the CS.

The new curriculum, 2-6-3-3-3 system had already been rolled out for early childhood education level to grade three this year, 2019.

Seven publishers were tasked with the duty of printing 16 million grade four textbooks for all the 14 subjects and were to be distributed to schools before the end of the year 2019, to cater for all the estimated 1.2 grade, four learners.

Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) was among the seven publishing companies that were to print grade four textbooks, as the ministry of education strived to make sure they were consulting with publishers for the success of the rollout.

In readiness for the CBC grade four roll-out, the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) is also training 68,490 teachers this December.

By April, 91,620 teachers had been trained by the TSC, which expressed satisfaction with how the new curriculum training is taking place and the commitment that trainee teachers are showing towards it.
