Mike Sonko Arrested Aboard SGR in Voi

The embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been arrested in Voi, Taita-Taveta County aboard the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

The arrest of Governor Mike Sonko has come barely hours since his arrest was ordered by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, in the view of glaring cameras in a press conference.

“Following a comprehensive investigation by the EACC and upon receiving and independently reviewing the investigation file I have found sufficient evidence to warrant prosecution and I have therefore ordered for the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko,” said DPP Haji.

DPP Noordin Haji announced that the governor would be questioned over the loss of 357 million shillings of county funds together with a section of Nairobi County officials.

DPP Haji ordered that Governor Mike Sonko be also grilled for attempting to hinder investigations.

Nairobi County Officers whose order for arrest together with Governor Mike Sonko was announced are said to have facilitated or benefitted from the irregular procurement and payments.

Peter Mbugua – County Secretary

Patrick Mwangangi – Head Supply Chain Management

Edwin Kariuki – Negotiation, Tender Opening and Evaluation Committee member

Lawrence Mwangi- Negotiation, Tender Opening and Evaluation Committee member

Preston Mwandiki- Negotiation, Tender Opening and Evaluation Committee member

Wambua Ndaka – Clerical Officer

Andrew Nyasiego – Clerical Officer

This comes a few weeks after Sonko failed to stop the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) from investigating him over corruption allegations leveled against him.

The agency is also investigating the governor over alleged past criminal records.

Governor Sonko has been arrested after DPP Haji ordered for his arrest together with a section of the County’s Executive officials saying there is sufficient evidence to prosecute them for the loss of 357 million shillings of taxpayer’s money.
