Embattled Nairobi County governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko failed to appear before a Voi court of law where a case filed against him was to be heard, because he was too sick to attend court.

According to Govenor Sonko’s lawyers, he could not personally attend court as he was observing his doctor’s advice to stay home and recuperate from there.

Sonko’s lawyers presented the court with the doctor’s report which showed that the governor was diagnosed with hypertensive urgency, soft tissue injury to the left chest wall and bilateral hip osteoarthritis.

Senior Resident Magistrate Frederick Nyakundi who had provided orders that Governor Sonko attends court personally had postpone hearing to next year.

Magistrate Nyakundi rescheduled the hearing of Sonko’s three charges to 21st January 2020, and insisted that he (Sonko) attends court personally after having presented himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Voi.

Sonko’s lawyer, George Kithi assured the court that his client would appear personally in court in January as ordered.

In today’s hearing, governor Sonko was to respond to three charges that had been leveled against him with regard to his recent dramatic arrest.

The governor was charged with assaulting Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakubu by kicking him on the thigh during his arrest at Ikanga Airstrip on 6th December, blocking the officer from executing his duties.

The governor was also accused of resisting arrest when he violently refused to be handcuffed and causing chaos when he was required to board a chopper, further making the work of the officers difficult.

For these cases, the prosecution lined up six witnesses, among them Rashid Yakubu, James Mwanzia, Michael Muriithi, Fred Sabai, Stephen Mtawa, and Ibrahim Ahmed.

Apart from assault cases and using abusive language, the governor has 19 counts of corruption and abuse of office charges against him.
