Top Nature Places to Visit with Your Children Around Nairobi

It is the festive season…hurray!Not so fast, some of us have to work and the increase in bus fares has also made it difficult for majority to travel while well, some actually have nowhere to go as the only home they know is their rentals in Nairobi.

Whichever situation you are in, do not allow this Christmas to be depressing as there are so many options you can do without spending heftily, take the young ones out to some of these budget-conscious places and have a merry Christmas.

Take a child, below 6 years on a safari and you will be pleasantly surprised by how illuminating and pure they can be. Children are said to be the most angelic creatures and can teach adults how to find happiness even when you have no reason to be happy and definitely how to be genuine and true to yourself.

This December Holiday need not be boring, take advantage and know who your child is growing to be as you discover the country’s rich heritage. We have researched a number of places, all with natural habitat and animals, that could enable you to bond and have fun!

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust 

Located at the Bogan Gate along Magadi Road, David Sheldrick wildlife trust is home to orphaned baby elephants and rhinos.

The Wildlife Trust, born from one family’s passion for Kenya’s wilderness, is today, the most successful orphaned elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. It is also one of the pioneering conservation organizations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa. The trust is recommended to all ages.

Oloolua Nature Trail

Oloolua Nature Trail is known for its adventurous nature. The nature trail is a great escape from the busy noisy and polluted city life. It is easily accessible and opens on a daily basis.

To get there, if using public means, take matatu or bus number 24 from the city center, and alight at the junction of Bogani Road and Karen Road near Karen Blixen Museum, it is 600 meters to your left.

If driving, take the Uhuru Highway till Nyayo Stadium, once there, turn right onto Lang’ata Road and drive past Bomas of Kenya till the junction to Hardy. Turn left onto Lang’ata South Road, then right onto Bogani Road. Drive till the junction between Bogani and Karen Road, turn left. Oloolua Nature Trail is 600 meters from the junction. Oloolua is recommended for all ages.

Maasai Ostrich Farm

Located along the Kajiado Road in Kitengela, Maasai Ostrich Farm is a great tourist attraction sight.

You get to get up close and personal with the ostriches while watching birds. The children get an opportunity to ride on the Ostrich’s back before you can all settle down to dine at their serene facilities. It is recommended for all ages.

Ngong’ Hills

22 kilometers south-west of Nairobi city in Kajiado County, is the series of hills suitable for hiking, picnics, and exercise.

The Ngong’ hiking trail starts from Ngong’ town if using public transport, board matatu number 111 from Railway’s stage and if using private means, drive past Karen to Ngong’ Police station where you can park and walk to the town from where you begin your hike.

Ngong’ hills are recommendable to children above 8 years of age.

Paradise Lost Resort and Park

Paradise Lost is located in Kiambu town, 14 kilometers from Nairobi, and a distance of about 10 minutes’ drive from the city center.

A magnificent tourist attraction in Kenya, the park is basically an oasis in the middle of a coffee farm. It houses a waterfall, caves, and a small lake where one can enjoy boat riding. There are also picnic sites, swings and horses availed for riding at a cost. It is recommended for all ages.
