The Facebook-owned messaging application will stop working on several smartphones starting with Windows smartphones this month. It’s currently available on select versions of the devices but will cease to be from December 31.

WhatsApp might not be available in the Microsoft Store after July 1, 2019. It’s not just Windows phone owners that are going to be disappointed though as WhatsApp will also stop working on several Android smartphones and iPhones next year.

As of February 1, 2020, people using Android versions 2.3.7 or older will not be able to create new accounts or re-verify existing accounts.

The same fate will apply to users of iPhones running on iOS 8 or older.

As such, the only solution faced by smartphone users impacted will be to simply upgrade their handset.

WhatsApp says that anyone using these older phones can no longer create new accounts or re-verify existing accounts.

‘Because we no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time,’ the company said in a blog post announcing the cut-off dates.

This comes out after recently rolled out new features where you can decide who can add you to a WhatsApp group, use of fingerprint to unlock messages and call waiting. Call waiting allows you to choose to pick some other call or continue with the one currently going on.

Still under development are some new features such as Dark mode, Battery saver option, Self-destructing message feature, WhatsApp’s ‘Delete Message’ feature will automatically delete the messages and make it seem like the message never existed.
