Two students who were injured after an inferno razed down a part of Bahati School in Nakuru on Saturday,18th January 2020, are still recuperating as the school makes efforts to continue learning despite the incident that has left one student dead.

The Bahati School fire incident happened on Saturday night while students were in for night preps and have resulted in the death of one student, injury to 73 students and hospital admissions of two while property of unknown value was destroyed.

The Bahati School student who died during the raging inferno is said to have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning according to the School’s Board of Management Chair Francis Mbugua.

The form three girl who died in the Bahati School fire was in the dormitory during the night preps when the fire incident occurred and died of choking on carbon monoxide and not burns.

The burnt School dormitory hosted 97 students who lost their personal effects in the inferno but who according to the school management will be cared for and provided to ensure the school returns to normalcy.

Details on why the late form three students who died in the School were in the dormitory when the fire broke out while her colleagues were in the classes for the night preps remain scanty.

Sources that sought anonymity said the girl who passed away in the Bahati School fire appeared disturbed days before the tragedy hit citing that the deceased student had even spoken of suicide.

“We also wonder what the student was doing alone in the dormitory. Investigations are underway and will find out,” the Bahati School board chairman told the media.

Bahati DCC Mutua Kisilu urged the Bahati School parents to remain calm as investigations were continuing as the Educational Director for Rift Valley John Ololutua said the school won’t be closed, as the management was able to handle the girls with the remaining resources.

“The school is in a position to provide for the affected students and learning will continue,” said Ololutua.

As Bahati School places its best foot forward in moving past the incident that has left many traumatized in the facility with physical and psychological wounds that time will scar, it remains worrying about whether the dead student intentionally lit the dorm on fire in ending her life.

The incident freshens up the memory of a fire incident that occurred at Moi Girls’ Lang’ata and claimed the lives, 7 students, as parents await upon the Government to amend the proposals that were made following the incident to ensure safety in schools.
