A child is a gift, a priceless gift and an African belief that when a baby is born, they come sufficiently provided are not so especially for a couple in Umoja Estate, Bahati, who killed their baby because of lack of food.

The 32-year-old mother and her 36-year-old husband are reported to have dumped the baby’s body in a latrine after murdering their own blood and flesh, an action they blame poverty on.

The baby, born on February 7th, 2020 in Umoja Estate, Bahati Sub-County, was reportedly strangled by its mother shortly after birth.

Francis Mwangi, the Bahati sub-county police commander who confirmed the incident said that the couple is now in police custody.

The couple, according to the Sub-County Police Commander, murdered the baby around six hours after the woman gave birth in the Umoja estate house.

“Our investigations have established that the baby was born at around 11 pm and was murdered at around 4 am,” the police commander said.

The case was reported by the baby’s maternal grandmother who said she had been waiting for the birth of the child and was surprised to notice her daughter had delivered but there was no sight of the baby.

The maternal grandmother, according to police officers was concerned and suspected that either the daughter had procured an abortion or given birth and so requested intervention from police officers.

Police officers raided the couple’s single room to try and find out what could have happened and were shocked when the couple confessed to murdering their baby.

“We killed the baby because we are jobless and have nothing to feed her on,” the couple reportedly told the police officers who raided their Umoja estate one-roomed house.

Poverty, depression or simply just plain criminals is a question that remains unanswered with people divided on sympathizing with the couple or being angry following their murder on their newborn child.

The couple has three other children ranging between the ages of 10 and three years that live with them in the one-roomed house that they argued they could not even afford the rent for hence killing the newly born child.

The two are set to be arraigned in court to face murder charges for killing their child.
