Kiambu Governor James Nyoro has appointed Joyce Wanjiku Ngugi as his new deputy governor.

The newly appointed deputy governor, Joyce Ngugi is the widow to the former Kiambu legislator Joseph Ngugi who died of a heart attack in 2014.

Ms. Ngugi has a rich portfolio as she is a counseling psychologist with a master’s degree in Education from Kenyatta University and a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Egerton University.

Ms. Ngugi who is a mother of two has been the Chairperson of the National Council for Children Services.

Joyce Ngugi had vied for Gatundu South Parliamentary seat in 2017 as an Independent candidate but pulled out of the race at the last minute citing intimidation from other candidates. She was the main opponent to the current Member of Parliament Moses Kuria.

Ms. Ngugi will have to undergo vetting by the Members of the County Assembly before she assumes office.

The appointment of Joyce Ngugi is a fulfillment of Nyoro’s promise to appoint a woman as his deputy Governor in the politically charged Kiambu County.

The appointment of Ngugi also confirms the implausible rumors that had earlier spread about an appointed of deputy governor. Nyoro had dismissed the claims.

Nyoro who assumed office after the impeachment of former governor Ferdinand Waititu had promised to empower women in his tenure and appointing one as his deputy was going to be the first step of women empowerment.

“I want to empower women in line with the Building Bridges Initiative recommendation, ”Nyoro affirmed.

Nyoro said that he will also do some changes in his cabinet appointing the following for different posts; Joseph Nganga Murega – (Health CEC), Wilson Mburu Kang’ethe (Finance), Mary Kamau (Education) and James Mitambo Maina (Land and Housing).

David Kimani Kuria -Water and Environment, Isabel Waiyaki -Youth and Sports, Margaret Waithera- Administration and Public Service, Joseph Kamau -Trade and Tourism, Kigo Njenga -Roads CEC and Samuel Mugo -Transport.
