Sauti Sol to Take Ksh 400,000 Home in Latest MCSK Royalties Distribution

Sauti Sol will take the highest amount of royalties, 400,000 shillings in specific after the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) announced on Thursday, 27th February 2020, that it will distribute royalties.

According to MCSK, a total of 37,500,000 shillings in royalties were collected during the period between July and December 2019.

From the 37.5 million shillings, MCSK says that 22.5 billion shillings, about 60 percent, will be distributed based on the amount of airplay received by the artists.

The remaining 15 billion shillings, which is 40 percent of the total amount in royalties, will be designated for general distribution to all members.

The move by the MCSK to distribute royalties marks a departure from the widely condemned flat rate of 2,500 shillings distributed as royalties by the society in mid-2019.

In his address to the nation in January, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed that all payments of royalties should be channeled through a single centrally-managed account at the Kenya Copyrights board, a move he said would increase the amount distributed from an average of 200 million shillings p.a to 2 billion shillings.

In a press conference yesterday, MCSK Chairman Japheth Kasanga also said that all royalties collected from licensing Performances in Public Places (PPP) should be distributed twice a year, which is as from April 30 and October 31.
