Tullow Oil Kenya To Fire Some Of Its 650 Employees

If you thought the year 2020 will be fair to employees as compared to 2019, it is time you reconsidered as companies continue to lay off employees in an effort to cut on costs in order to remain afloat.

Tullow Oil Kenya has announced plans to lay off some of its 650 employees “in a bid to cut on operational costs” that have seen it spending more on salaries and little impact on the business.

“The company has had to review and asses its financial performance and business operations to ensure resources are allocated in the most efficient way… Due to this review it has become necessary to restructure the company with some roles becoming unnecessary,” said the company in a memo.

The laying off of employees by Tullow Oil Kenya comes a month after the company suspended the transport of oil from Turkana by road due to poor status of the road demanding that the government repairs the roads before the transport can resume.

Job Losses

The year 2019 was characterized by massive job losses as tens of businesses chose to close down or fire employees in an effort to sustain the businesses in the wake of the high cost of doing business in the country.

It is estimated that at least 25,000 people lost their jobs in 2019 with a record number of 5,000 losing their jobs within a period of three months to August 2019.

The massive job losses among Kenyans go against the promise by the Jubilee Government of creating at least 100,000 jobs annually for Kenyans, the majority of them being the youth.

“People are losing jobs, the cost of living is skyrocketing, inflation is biting and Kenyans are frustrated. There is no more cash in the pockets of Kenyans and this should not be taken lightly,” said Mr. Ambrose Ochieng’.
