Congo’s former President Jacques Joaquim Yhombi-Opango is dead.

President Yhombi died in a Paris hospital where he had been admitted with symptoms relating to coronavirus.

The former President was 81 years of age at his time of death and is reported to have had other diseases by the time he caught the coronavirus infections.

Yhombi-Opango will be remembered for leading the Congo-Brazzaville from the year 1977 until he was defeated in 1979 by the Congo’s current leader, Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The now late former Congo President Yhombi-Opango spent several years in prison before multi-party democracy was introduced in 1991 where he served as prime minister until a civil war broke out in 1997.

President Yhombi-Opango went into exile in France, before being allowed to return home a decade later.

Coronavirus, a virus that began in China’s Wuhan has claimed the lives of thousands and spread to over half the globe including in Africa.
