The deadly Coronavirus continues to sweep across the world with China remaining the worst hit. The latest country to confirm the arrival of the virus in Africa is South Africa. So far, all cases but one that has been confirmed in Africa are from foreigners.

Kenya is yet to record any positive case of Coronavirus although the Ministry of Health has put on high alert some counties including Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Kakamega.

According to the Cabinet Secretary for Health Mr. Mutahi Kagwe, it is not a matter of if but when the virus will come knocking.

Here are some of the ways to protect yourself against Coronavirus:

Avoid close contact with anyone showing signs of respiratory illness. Coronavirus, in most cases, manifests itself as a common cold and it is hard to distinguish but for your own safety, stay alert.

Wear gloves at all times. Change them regularly and wash them with clean water every time you use them. Coronavirus can be transmitted through surfaces.

Wash your hands regularly. As President Barack Obama recently said, this is “common sense.” Always wash your hands with water and soap.

Avoid touching doorknobs and banisters. Many people come in contact with doorknobs, especially at offices and other public places. It is hard to avoid but if it is a must you do, then wash your hands before anything.

Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. This is to prevent particles from your mouth and nose from “flying” to other surfaces of to people around you. Wash your hands after that.

Wear surgical masks. However, the masks are not that effective and many people think. They should be changed regularly and not relied on.

Cook your food thoroughly. Avoid hotels or eateries that do not observe hygiene, especially in washing their utensils.

Avoid shaking hands, hugging or kissing. If it is a must you say hi to someone, then use your feet but just wave and go your way.
