Billionaire businessman Jack Ma has donated 20,000 Coronavirus testing kits, 100,000 masks and 1,000 protective gear to each African country.

“To each of the 54 African countries, we will donate 20,000 test kits, 100,000 masks and 1,000 medical use protective  suits and face shields,” he said through a tweet.

Jack Ma who joined Twitter on Monday, sent out his first tweet by announcing the shipment of the donation of face masks, test kits and protective medical suits to the United States of America.

About Africa, Jack Ma says the continent can be ahead of the virus and avoid it before it hits them hard. He says the continent has enough time to keep the virus away by treating the few confirmed cases.

“We cannot ignore the potential risk to Africa and assume this continent of 1.3 billion people will blissfully escape the crisis. The world cannot afford the unthinkable consequences of a COVID-19 pandemic in Africa,” he said.

Here is his statement:

The rate of infections in Africa is still low with less than 1,000 confirmed cases. Most of the confirmed cases involve foreigners or citizens who traveled outside the country to affected countries such as China or the United States of America.

In the East African region, Kenya was the first country to confirm the first case. Kenya now has three confirmed cases, 17 quarantined cases and three others with signs and under “close watch of medics.”

President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Sunday, suspended learning in all learning institutions and ordered all students to be send home to prevent the spread of the virus. The government has also suspended visits to prisons in the next 30 days.

Ethiopia, Rwanda and Tanzania have all confirmed the presence of the virus with all of them saying that they are ready to combat the disease. Many still think Africa is not ready. What do you think? Is Africa ready?
