Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has seized eight brands of fake sanitizers in Nairobi and Nakuru.

The seizure of the eight fake sanitizer brands comes in the wake of the Government’s promise to crackdown on unscrupulous individuals in the wake of coronavirus cases in the country.

The Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officers have since taken to a raid set to nab the manufacturers of the eight fake sanitizer brands.

“We received information from members of the public that, some traders are selling sanitizers without the standardization mark (SM) from KEBS, meaning they are fake,” KEBS Director Peter Gaigwara said.

“We are working with the DCI officers to nab the manufacturers who are currently on the run,” Gaigwara said.

Fake brands of products are flooding the market since the call to regularly sanitize one’s hands begun following the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus in Kenya.

The government promised to manufacture alcohol-based sanitizers and distribute them to members of the public for free in line with a directive to curb the spread of Covid-19 and discourage unscrupulous traders from hiking prices.

“The government is desirous of distributing affordable sanitizers to the general public. To this end, corporations in the oil industry have volunteered to produce alcohol-based sanitizers for distribution for free to the general public,” a government statement read in part.

The statement dated 18th March 2020 had the government calling upon factories in the country to ensure smooth manufacture and distribution of sanitizers that adhere to recommendations by the World Health Organization to members of the public.
